What’s that smell? Dog Breath.

In recognition of National Pet Dental Health Month, the makers of Nylabone® remind pet parents that “Dog Breath” is no laughing matter.

NEPTUNE CITY, NJ – - What would your breath smell like if you didn’t brush your teeth for say…3 or 4 years?  That’s what’s going on in your pet’s mouth. Though it’s commonly joked about, “Dog Breath” – that nasty scent you smell when your dog jumps up to give you a kiss – is usually caused by poor dental health and can be a sign of serious health risks. That’s why the makers of Nylabone®, the makers of safe, healthy chews since 1955, are encouraging pet parents to practice good doggie dental hygiene by giving dogs age- and size-appropriate chews that protect from tooth breakage and clean the dog’s teeth as he chews.

“Studies show that 80% of dogs show signs of oral disease by the age of 3,” says Mike Connelly, Vice President of Marketing for Nylabone® Products based in Neptune City, N.J., “and poor oral health can lead to more dangerous conditions including lung, heart and kidney problems.”

Connelly says just like any other member of the family, taking care of your dog’s oral health leads to an overall healthier pet. He reminds pet parents that if they wouldn’t ignore their own oral care they shouldn’t ignore their dogs’.

“Every time we get our teeth cleaned, pet parents need to replenish their pup’s supply of dental chews and pet dental health products like Nutri Dent® Edible Dental Chews,” he says.

He adds that periodontal disease is common among dogs (with smaller breeds most likely to encounter it), so Nylabone® recommends these simple steps to maintain your dog’s good oral health:
1.    Inspect teeth and gums frequently.
2.    Feed dogs a proper diet (consult your veterinarian).
3.    See your veterinarian regularly.
4.    During routine veterinary visits, be sure the doctor examines your dog’s mouth and advises when it’s time for a dental cleaning.
5.    Provide safe and healthy chews for your dog.

Signs of periodontal disease include:
•    loose teeth (not including baby teeth)
•    discolored teeth
•    bad breath
•    swollen gums
•    receding gum line
•    yellowish-brown crust of tartar around the gums
•    gums that bleed easily
•    broken teeth

Connelly adds that broken teeth are common among older dogs and are usually caused by the dog chewing on hard objects that are not intended for chewing.  He advises pet parents give their dogs age- and size-appropriate chews and chew toys like Dura Chew Bones, Pro Action Dental Chew or toys made of high quality natural rubber.
