‘Made in the U.S.A.’ Label Symbol of Quality Assurance at Nylabone®

Dog Owners Seeking Out American-Made Pet Treats After Concern Grows over China Recalls ‘Made in the U.S.A.’ Label Symbol of Quality Assurance at Nylabone®

Oct 2007

NEPTUNE CITY, NJ — Amid the rush of recalls of Chinese-produced pet foods and children’s toys, American dog owners are taking a closer look at product labels on canine treats, chews and other playthings. These “pet parents” want to find out first-hand where these items are made to ensure their quality and safety.

What they are discovering is that most Nylabone® Products are “Made in the U.S.A.” — a distinction that is prominently illustrated on its packaging with a golden retriever waving Old Glory herself.

“In the months since the recalls, a growing number of pet parents want to be sure that the dog products they are buying are free of anything that may be harmful to the health and well-being of their pets,” says Mark E. Johnson, executive vice president of Nylabone Products and parent company T.F.H. Publications, Inc. In fact, many pet parents are specifically asking what ingredients are used, the origins of those items and whether the products are made entirely in the United States, he adds.

“For over 50 years, Nylabone has been the leader in responsible pet care. The ‘Made in the U.S.A.’ label on our products has become a long-standing symbol of quality assurance and a commitment to product excellence,” Johnson says.

The majority of Nylabone Products are made at its Neptune, N.J.-based headquarters, including its popular Durable and Flexible non-edible chews, NutriDent® dental chews, Healthy Edibles® wholesome chews, Prime Choice® edible snacks, and its newest line, VidaÔ (certified) Organic Treats.

The renewed interest in American-made dog foods and treats has triggered an increased demand for Nylabone Products among pet retailers. They are available at most major pet retailers, as well as on the pet shelves of most major mass retail chains and supermarkets.

Since March 2007, pet food manufacturers have recalled more than 150 brands of dog and cat food across the nation after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found contaminants in ingredients imported from China. Most recently, lead-tainted paint was found on children’s toys made by Chinese manufacturers, prompting product recalls by several major U.S. toymakers.

Pet Product Safety CheckList

In selecting dog chews and treats that are safe and healthy as part of an overall nutritionally balanced diet, Johnson offers pet parents this advice:

-
Read the product packaging for the manufacturer source or distributor, as well as the ingredients

-If you have any question about whether a pet food has been recalled, check the FDA’s Web site at www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/petfood.html to review the latest list of recalled products.

-Call your veterinarian if your pet shows signs of illness, such as loss of appetite, weakness, lack of energy or vomiting.
