Golden Retrievers
Gentle, friendly, and energetic are some of the words commonly used to describe Golden Retrievers. These dogs, originally from Scotland, are often considered the perfect family dog. They are heavy shedders, need lots of exercise, and don't always get along with other pets, but most people agree that their good qualities far outweigh any questionable traits they may have. Golden Retrievers were bred to work as retrievers for hunters, a task that requires lots of energy and endurance. Just because they no longer retrieve for a living doesn't mean they don't still have a super high level of energy to burn! They are very active and require a lot of exercise. Whether that exercise consists of a good game of fetch or a run in the park, these dogs really need to exert all that energy. If they don't, they can easily develop problem behaviors (such as destructive chewing), caused by a need to channel all of their energy into something.
Golden Retrievers are extremely trainable and love to learn new things. Their easygoing temperament also helps to make training sessions fun. They are highly attuned to their owner, so they are able to pick up new commands and tricks very easily. A Golden that is properly trained is well on his way to becoming the perfect family dog! They are especially great with children, but Golden Retrievers make great pets for any family, big or small.
