5 New Year’s Resolutions for Your Dog

5 New Year’s Resolutions for Your Dog It’s the new year, and chances are you rang in 2013 with a personal resolution that you’re determined to keep. But did you forget about your dog? Fortunately, it’s never too late to make some resolutions on his behalf! Here are five promises to start:

  1. I promise we’ll get your weight where it belongs. In a study by Purina, thinner dogs were found to live an average of more than two years longer than slightly chubby ones. You want your dog with you for as many years as possible, so talk to his vet about a sensible weight-loss plan.

  2. I promise you’ll get sufficient exercise at least five times a week. This isn’t difficult with most dogs—it might just mean chasing his favorite toy across the living room floor for 20 minutes at a time, as well as taking daily walks.

  3. I promise you an annual physical checkup. Just do it—one appointment a year with the vet can save your dog’s life.

  4. I promise to give you social time with other dogs. While a fraction of dogs don’t enjoy the company of their brethren, most love to play and just hang out with other dogs. Find a play group (or start one) of other nicely behaved pups. Your dog will love you for it.

  5. I promise to take as good care of myself as I take care of you. Your dog needs you to be healthy and long lived, just like you want him to be. So go get your own annual checkups!
