A Visit with Just Jesse

Most people spend time cleaning up after their dog, but imagine if your dog cleaned up after you… Jesse, a six-year-old Jack Russell Terrier does precisely that for his owner, Heather Brook. Besides helping put away dishes, do the laundry, and pick up the garbage, Jesse is kind enough to give Heather massages, help her keep her exercise routine, and get the newspaper in the morning.

Jesse, better known as the YouTube phenomenon “Just Jesse,” has appeared in several TV commercials, The Late Show with David Letterman, The Rachel Ray Show, and National Geographic Kids Magazine. His videos showcase his myriad talents, including performing a walking handstand, skateboarding, walking backwards on his hind legs, and performing summersaults. Jesse is taught exclusively using positive reinforcement and clicker training, and is currently in the process of learning how to ride a scooter.

Whoever said tricks can’t be useful? Jesse loves helping around the house, and I just love his happy attitude and smile on his face.

According to Heather, “He definitely inspired me to [teach him] tricks because he and I had a bond from just spending time together and we’ve been able to learn from each other. I thought it would be cool for him to learn useful tricks; some people say that tricks aren’t useful—they’re stupid—but we know otherwise.”

Heather has some interesting experience in animal training, having trained her three mice how to come when their names are called, as well as move to a specific target. Jesse is her first dog, receiving him as a gift for her 16th birthday. She says that Jesse loves to learn things and always puts his own unique twist on it.

He also knows how to use his training to get exactly what he wants. Heather enjoys malt ball candies sometimes (who doesn’t?), and when Jesse sees her eating them he’ll come and beg for some. Although he can’t have the chocolate outside, he loves the malt inside. He will butter Heather up by rubbing her neck or kneading her shoulders and then, when she’s not paying full attention, he’ll grab the malt balls and enjoy.

Jesse shares his special tips to persuade humans to obtain great Nylabone products.

When not performing (or scheming) Jesse enjoys hiking and rollerblading—he pulls Heather full speed when she has rollerblades on. He also enjoys holding a Nylabone Toro rawhide chew between his paws and gnawing on it.

Heather’s number one piece of advice for dog owners is, “Have fun with your dog before anything else, because if you have fun with your dog you’ll have a bond that training will just follow naturally. If you’re determined to do something and you actually stay focused, you’ll be able to achieve it.”

Aerobics with Jesse! Do you need encouragement to start or continue an exercise program? Look no further, Jesse can get you back on track. If a little Jack Russell Terrier can do it, so can you!

Heather and Jesse are simply the BEST!! The bond those two share, and the wonderful videos they make are awesome. Heather is one of the sweetest and most helpful canine educators I know; she gives great information and is always willing to help those in need. Jesse just has the cutest face in all that he does. That smile brimming with happiness as he helps out around the house is the simply adorable. Now that’s a great relationship that we can all strive for with our best friends!! =o) Keep it up you two; you are both inspirational!!

Oh ,and they love Nylabones too! They are the only chewies I let them have. I only wish they had the little spiky blue bones in a multi pack without the other types of bones.
